Figure study for APHRODITE.
Pencil. 18 x 24 inches.
Model~British Nicole Jean.
I always begin my pencil drawings with a hard pencil, like H. Softly and little by little I draw the outline and begin the shading using parallel lines, just touching the paper.
From time to time, I use my fingers to blend slightly the graphite and begin to use other pencils like 3B or 4B...ending with a 6B for the darkest shadows.
You cannot obtain blacks with pencil...the photo is only a bit darker...purposely, in order to try to show more of the midtones shadowing.
The final protective fixative makes the pencil a little more contrasted.
It is always better to use a colored paper when drawing because you can also add white touches and obtain much more volume.
How... it's the only word I can think about at the moment, sorry...
How did you achieve such delicate tonal differences? Did you touch the paper so lightly that lines are almost invisible?
And how did you do it that the shadows are so deeply dark?
How long did it take you?
And most of all, you mentioned somewhere that you were a self-taught artist. How exactly did you come this far? How did you learn, how did you practice, for how long?
Excuse my inquisitive nature, but it is my dream to be where you are and I could use any pointers you can give me. I ask people about those things all the time, so please don't feel interrogated.
I complete agree, and would also very much like answers to all of the questions above. Your art is absolutely mind-boggling, I love staring at it closely and finding all the strange little details, hidden all over the place. Thanks for bringing some true beauty and surrealism into my life! And for the love of art, please keep up the awesome work!
I think a lot of artists are self-taught.. I know most of my favorites are at least. I'm self-taught as well.. and have been drawing for three years. I've found that you are your best teacher. You learn more by drawing/painting..etc than by having some professor "teach".
I love seeing the pencil studies on top of the finished works... it really adds so much more to the process of creation to me. It's just amazing what you can do with both!
